In short

How we work

European kitchen cabinets as we build them: frameless construction with no face frame, full-access interiors, fronts that sit flush in one plane, built to order in Germany by Nolte to your room's measurements and installed by our own team across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland.

The answer

What are European kitchen cabinets, and how do they differ from American cabinets?

European kitchen cabinets are frameless: the door covers the whole carcase, so there is no face frame, the interior is fully accessible and the fronts sit flush in one plane. Ours are German, built to order by Nolte in Löhne to the room's measurements, with handleless, grooved real wood, metal-look, glass and lacquer fronts, designed at our Alexandria showroom and installed by our own team across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland.

Before you start

German, not generic European

Our cabinetry is Nolte Küchen, family-owned in Löhne since 1958, built in Löhne and Melle and shipped to more than 60 countries.

Before you start

Italian-inspired directions

Some design directions lean toward Italian expressiveness. The cabinetry is still made in Germany. The wardrobes we carry, Tomasella, are the Italian product on the floor.

Before you start

Frameless construction

No face frame, full-access interiors, fronts in one flat plane. It is why European cabinets read as clean lines from across the room.

Before you start

Built to order, not stocked

Every carcase is made to your measurements after the design is approved. Nothing is pulled from a warehouse in a standard width.

Before you start

Sustainability, as Nolte reports it

The first German kitchen maker certified to both PEFC and FSC, with over 99% of its wood from certified sources. Certified products on request.

Before you start

Compare it in person

Full-size European kitchens are on the Alexandria showroom floor: open the drawers, test the hinges, compare the fronts under real light.

Frameless and face-frame

European cabinets beside American cabinets

The difference is in the construction before it is in the look. This is what changes when the cabinet has no face frame.

Frameless and face-frame

Construction

A wood frame on the front of the carcase; the door overlays or sits inside the frame.

No frame. The door covers the carcase edge, and the whole interior is accessible.

Frameless and face-frame

Widths

Standard increments, usually three inches, with filler panels.

Built to the room's measurements.

Frameless and face-frame

Drawers

The frame narrows the opening.

Full-width drawers, and inner drawers behind a single front.

Frameless and face-frame

Fronts

Painted wood and shaker profiles.

Real wood veneer, grooved real wood, soft-matt lacquer, metal-look, slate-look and glass fronts, in flat planes.

Frameless and face-frame

Hardware

Visible hinges, knobs and pulls.

Concealed soft-close hinges, grip channels or a slim bar handle.

How the project runs

01Consultation

We review your room, your storage, your architecture and your budget at the Alexandria showroom, in a private design appointment, complimentary, with no time limit, and agree what the cabinetry has to do.

How the project runs

023D Cabinet Design

Layout, elevations, proportions and finishes come back as photorealistic 3D, so you approve the cabinetry on screen before anything is committed.

How the project runs

03Specification and Quote

Every carcase, front, countertop, handle and internal system is itemized, so you can see exactly what you are paying for and adjust before release.

How the project runs

04Built to Order in Germany

The approved specification goes into production in Germany, made to your dimensions, with a delivery date you can plan the rest of the project around.

How the project runs

05Measurement and Fit

The same team that designed the cabinetry checks the site and installs it, so nothing is lost in a handoff between the drawing and the tools.

How the project runs

Timeline for a complete kitchen

From the day you sign, most kitchens take about five months: 2 to 4 weeks to settle the last details, then 16 weeks for production in Germany, shipping, installation and the tile work.

For cabinetry on its own, production and delivery typically run a few months from the point the design is approved and released. You receive a schedule once the design is final, and we plan the rest of the project around that date.

The cost

What European kitchen cabinets cost, and what moves the number

Cabinetry alone starts at $15,000 for a small kitchen, $35,000 for a medium kitchen and $55,000 for a large one. These figures are for custom cabinetry only. The final price depends on kitchen size, cabinet configuration, materials, internal storage and selected details. Countertops, appliances, construction and installation are priced separately unless included in the proposal.

What moves the number

The size of the kitchen

The starting tiers are $15,000 for a small kitchen, $35,000 for a medium kitchen and $55,000 for a large one. The number of carcases is the first thing that moves the price.

What moves the number

Fronts

Soft-matt lacquer, solid and veneered real wood, metal-look and mirror-glass fronts sit at different points in the range, and every one is on the showroom floor to compare.

What moves the number

Interiors

Inner drawers, pull-outs, dividers and pantry systems are itemized one by one, so you can see what each adds.

What moves the number

Hardware

Handles, or handleless fronts with a grip channel, and the hinge and drawer systems behind them.

What moves the number

Installation

Installation by our own team is its own line in the proposal, next to the cabinetry. If you have your own contractor, we can supply the cabinetry alone.

What moves the number

A complete remodel

In 2026 our completed kitchen projects ran from $42,000 to $190,000 and up, with most between $90,000 and $145,000. Those are total installed values, not cabinetry prices.

Directions to the showroom

Asked often

Do you specialize in European cabinets?

Yes. Our kitchen cabinetry is German and built to order. Design directions can be Italian-inspired, but the cabinetry itself is made in Germany.

Asked often

What is the difference between German and Italian kitchens?

German kitchens prioritize engineered precision: ergonomic planning, durable carcasses and clean, minimal fronts. Italian kitchens lean toward expressive design and avant-garde finishes. We build German kitchens and offer Italian-inspired design directions.

Asked often

Where are your cabinets made?

Our cabinetry is manufactured in Germany and built to order for each project. German production gives you tighter tolerances, better hinge and drawer engineering, and finishes that hold their color and texture through daily use. Some of the design directions we work in are Italian inspired, but the cabinetry itself is made in Germany.

Asked often

Which cabinet brands do you carry?

Our kitchen cabinetry is Nolte, built to order in Germany. We do not sell stock or semi-custom brands, so if you are comparing KraftMaid, Fabuwood or Forevermark, expect a different product and a different price: cabinetry here starts at $15,000.

Asked often

What is the difference between custom and semi-custom cabinets?

Semi-custom cabinetry comes in fixed increments, usually three inches, with a limited set of doors and finishes. Custom cabinetry is built to your dimensions with no increment to work around. The practical difference shows up at the edges of the room: at ceilings, around windows, and where cabinetry meets an appliance or an out-of-square wall.

Asked often

How much do custom kitchen cabinets cost in Northern Virginia?

As a planning guide, cabinetry for a smaller kitchen starts around $15,000, a medium kitchen around $35,000, and a larger kitchen around $55,000. These are cabinetry starting points, not the cost of a complete renovation. Countertops, appliances, and construction work are quoted separately so you can see what each part of the project costs.
